What is keyword cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization is when two or more pages on one site target the same query and the same intent. They compete for one spot in the results, and links and clicks split between them.

Most checkers find it after it happens, in Search Console data for pages that already rank. seodraft checks at the two moments you can still avoid it: when a topic enters the plan and when a draft asks to be approved.

Stored topics
A new question that shares most of its content words with one in your bank is withheld, and the stored twin is named.
Published pages
After a sitemap import, a question one of your pages already covers is withheld the same way.
Rewordings
A classifier flags a question that repeats a stored one in different words, so you can merge or keep it.
The same term
A draft whose target term another article already covers fails the rules, and the post is marked failed.
Similar titles
A title 60% or more similar to another post's gets an advisory.
Translations
The same article in another language is linked as a translation and never counts as a twin.

How a twin gets stopped

A twin can be stopped at three points, and each one is cheaper than the next.

  1. 1

    The agent adds topics. Near-duplicates of a stored topic or a published page are withheld before their metrics are bought, with the twin named.

  2. 2

    The classifier reads the rest. Rewordings that share no words are flagged, and the agent merges them with merge_topics or keeps them on purpose.

  3. 3

    The rules check the draft. A draft on a term another article covers fails. The fix is editing that article, and rewording the topic will not get the draft through.

What it costs

A withheld topic is never measured, so the ~USD 0.11 metrics batch is not spent on a twin.

Can I publish two posts on the same keyword anyway?
The rule reads the target term, so a new title on the same term still fails. Edit the article that covers it, or point the new post at a different question.
Does it need Search Console?
It reads your topic bank, your imported sitemap and the articles in seodraft. Search Console data is not part of the check.
What about the same article in English and Spanish?
Link them as translations. A translation is never counted as cannibalization.
