Update old blog post or write new one? On a small blog, this check decides whether your next article adds traffic or adds a page that competes with one you already have. Below is the triage we run before asking an agent for a draft: four questions, four outcomes, and the signals that pick between them.
An example that circulated on X on 13 October 2026, posted by @travisunlocked, illustrates why volume alone falls short:
"It's been 6 months and Claude has been getting an average of 4 new blogs per week. You just passed 100 articles. [...] Your traffic went from 72 visitors a month to 121."
The last section covers the one case where a new post wins, and the first section removes most new posts from the queue.
Check whether a post with the same intent already exists
Search your own archive for the intent before you search Google for the keyword. Two posts share an intent when a reader who finds either one would be satisfied by it, even if the titles use different words.
Run a site search (site:yourdomain.com plus the core phrase) and read your blog index for synonyms. If one post already answers the question, the default outcome is an update.
Eric Siu listed this step as item 3 of the 21 bots he posted on X on 11 October 2026: "3. Topic triage: decides whether to draft, update, delete or consolidate before anyone writes". The same list keeps the final call with a person: "send, publish and spend stay behind a human yes".
Look at what the existing post already ranks for
Open Search Console, filter Performance by the page, and read its queries for the last 3 months. A post with impressions but a low click-through rate needs a better title and a fresher answer, so you update it.
A post with zero impressions after 3 months is a different case. Check that it is indexed with the URL Inspection tool, then decide between a rewrite in place and a delete.
The page-level view also shows queries you never targeted. Those are often the new post you were about to write, already half answered by the old one.
Merge two posts that compete for one query
Merge when two of your URLs show impressions for the same query in Search Console. The impressions split across both pages, and so do the links you earn.
Keep the URL with more impressions or backlinks, move the unique sections from the weaker post into it, and 301-redirect the weaker URL. Our guide to fixing keyword cannibalization walks through that repair step by step, after the fact.
seodraft runs a similar check at the start: its cannibalization stop compares a new term with the stored topics and the published pages before anything is measured.
Delete a post that serves no reader
Delete a post when it has no impressions, no links pointing to it, and no intent you still want to serve. Return a 410, or redirect it when a close match exists on the site.
Write a new post only for an intent nobody on your site answers
Write a new post when the first three checks come back empty: no post with the intent, no competing URLs, and a query worth answering. Then read the results page for that query to pick the format.
When we ran this check on 13 October 2026, seodraft research_topic (DataForSEO) showed that the first 8 Google results for this question are refresh how-tos and update-vs-new threads from Orbit Media, Reddit and Quora, with no AI Overview. None of them gives a rule for the merge and delete cases, which is why this post exists.
Before the agent writes, give it a brief with the intent, the angle and the evidence it may cite. Our content brief template lists the fields we fill in.
Start your next request with the triage
Run the four questions in order on the next topic in your queue, and write down the outcome next to the topic before anyone drafts.
For the long-term routine of re-measuring what you published, the measure and maintain lesson covers baselines and what to compare.
seodraft runs the duplicate and cannibalization checks before every topic and leaves publishing to you. It costs $9/month for one workspace with up to 3 people, extra workspaces are $5/month, and the 7-day trial needs no card. Start your trial.
