ChatGPT for SEO pays off on the jobs where you already hold the facts and need them organized or checked. On August 31, 2026, the European Commission designated ChatGPT a VLOSE, a very large online search engine under the EU's Digital Services Act. OpenAI reported about 159.1 million average monthly active recipients of ChatGPT search in the EU for the six months ending March 31, 2026.
I run seodraft's own blog with agents. For our own SEO we use OpenSEO skills together with the OpenSEO MCP server, claude-seo to a lesser extent, and seodraft to manage quality and the editorial process.
The query has measured demand. On September 27, 2026, DataForSEO measured 480 monthly US searches for "chatgpt for seo", and on October 8 Google showed an AI Overview for it. Getting cited inside ChatGPT's own answers is a separate job, covered in generative engine optimization for ChatGPT.
Below are six SEO tasks, each with the input ChatGPT needs and the spot where it starts to guess. The last one connects ChatGPT to seodraft over MCP, so your profile and evidence survive between chats. Pick the task that matches the post you are writing this week and start there.
- 1. Keyword clustering works once the terms are measured
- 2. A pasted SERP turns into a brief in one pass
- 3. The brief gets saved before the first paragraph
- 4. Drafts stay accurate when every number comes from you
- 5. Metadata gets the same fact-check as the body
- 6. An MCP connection gives ChatGPT a memory of your process
- Start with the brief if you add only one task
1. Keyword clustering works once the terms are measured
ChatGPT groups a keyword list into topics well, as long as every term in the list already carries a measured search volume.
Paste a CSV with the term, its volume and its intent, then ask which terms one page could answer together. Reading meaning across different phrasings is the slow part of clustering by hand, and it is the part ChatGPT does fastest.
The volumes have to come from a tool. Our October 1, 2026 keyword research for the 'claude seo' family ran through the OpenSEO MCP: 3 seed keywords, metrics for 32 terms and 6 SERPs, logged in the project's research log.
ChatGPT has no keyword database of its own. A volume it types without a tool behind it is a guess, so keep the measured column in the file and ask ChatGPT only to sort the rows.
2. A pasted SERP turns into a brief in one pass
ChatGPT turns a pasted SERP into a usable brief, because reading result titles and People Also Ask questions is pattern work it handles well.
Paste the top titles, the People Also Ask block and whether Google shows an AI Overview. Then ask for the search intent and for the one thing none of the results cover.
For this post, we read the first seven results of the SERP on October 8, 2026, including a Quora thread, a YouTube video and an expert guide still dated 2024. One is a prompt list and another covers content writing. None of them promised a way to keep your profile and evidence available to ChatGPT from one session to the next, and that gap became section 6.
The SERP itself is the paid part. In our own pipeline, where a classifier compares each draft against its brief, reading a whole 1,141-word article costs 0.0001 dollars, against 0.004 for one DataForSEO SERP lookup. A content brief built from that lookup is what ChatGPT should read before it plans anything.
3. The brief gets saved before the first paragraph
ChatGPT writes a tighter draft when the brief is saved before it writes a single paragraph of the body.
A brief here holds the intent, the angle, the H2 outline with the sentence each section opens with, and the evidence the article will use. Changing a plan that is still a short list takes a minute. Changing it after 1,200 words means a rewrite. A copy-ready version with seven fields is in the content brief template for AI drafts.
seodraft enforces that order through the MCP tools, a choice explained in why seodraft killed most of its web UI. The current workflow saves the brief before the body and requires every evidence item in the brief to reach the article.
In a plain ChatGPT chat you can copy the habit: ask for the brief, edit it yourself, and only then ask for the draft in the same conversation.
4. Drafts stay accurate when every number comes from you
ChatGPT drafts a solid first version from evidence you paste, and it fills any gap you leave with plausible invented detail.
Paste your own material first: a number you measured, a customer you can name, a mistake you made and fixed. Ask ChatGPT to use only those facts and to leave a visible placeholder wherever it needs one you did not give.
Google's guidance on AI content says generative AI "can be particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content." The same page warns that AI outputs may contain inaccuracies, which it calls hallucinations. Our guide to detecting AI hallucinations shows how to catch them before publishing.
How to hand your agent that material before it writes, with a profile and first-hand evidence, is in how to make AI write without sounding generic.
5. Metadata gets the same fact-check as the body
ChatGPT writes titles, meta descriptions, FAQ answers and alt text quickly, and Google asks you to review every one of them before publishing.
Google Search Central, in its generative AI guidance last updated October 1, 2026: "It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. This review also applies to metadata like <title> elements, meta description elements, structured data, and alternate texts for images, which can appear in Search results."
Give ChatGPT the hard limits with the request: titles up to 60 characters and descriptions between 120 and 160. Then read each line against the page it describes. The free meta description checker checks a description before it ships.
6. An MCP connection gives ChatGPT a memory of your process
Connecting ChatGPT to seodraft over MCP gives it your profile and evidence bank in every chat, along with the rules that check each draft.
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, lets an AI client call tools that live on a server. seodraft runs a remote MCP server at https://seodraft.app/mcp with 38 tools, and ChatGPT adds it as a custom app in developer mode. As of October 2026, OpenAI enables full MCP, with write actions, only on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu on the web. On Pro, developer mode is read-only, and seodraft needs write access to save the brief and the draft:
- On Business, only admins and owners can use developer mode, and each one turns it on for themselves in Settings → Apps → Advanced settings.
- On Enterprise or Edu, an admin grants you access in Permissions & Roles → Connected Data, and then you turn it on in Settings → Apps → Advanced settings.
- In Settings → Apps → Create, paste
https://seodraft.app/mcp, choose OAuth, sign in with the seodraft account tied to your workspace, then click Scan Tools and wait for it to finish. - Click Create, then ask ChatGPT to read your profile once to confirm the connection.
OpenAI warns that the UI and permissions for this feature may change, so if a menu is missing, check its developer mode guide.
From there ChatGPT can pull a SERP brief, draft from accepted evidence, run the rules and stop at your approval. Approval delivers a file marked draft: true to your repository, and publishing stays your call. The setup and its limits are on the ChatGPT connector page, and the server is described on the MCP server page.
Start with the brief if you add only one task
If you add only one of these tasks this week, make it the SERP-to-brief step, because every later task depends on it.
Clustering needs measured data first, and metadata needs a finished draft. The brief needs a pasted SERP and your judgment about the gap.
When you want the brief, the evidence and the rules to stay in place between chats, try seodraft with your own agent, whether that is ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise or Edu, or Claude, Cursor or Codex: your agent writes, the rules decide, you approve. The first 7 days are free with no card, and then it is $9 a month.
