Generative engine optimization for ChatGPT citations

Learn generative engine optimization as measurable LLM SEO: SERP brief costs, citable passages, and how to get cited by ChatGPT.

In short

Generative engine optimization means writing citable passages so ChatGPT or another model can use them as a source. Pair a SERP brief (~USD 0.004), three firsthand facts, and repeatable measurement: one citation stays a weak signal.

Generative engine optimization changes one thing in how a small product blog writes: the unit of work becomes the passage. This piece gives you a usable definition, how GEO sits next to LLM SEO and classic ranking work, and a cheap loop for passages ChatGPT can cite.

On August 31, 2026, the European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE) under the Digital Services Act. OpenAI reported about 159.1 million average monthly active recipients of ChatGPT search in the EU for the six months ending March 31, 2026. At that scale, ChatGPT is search infrastructure you can measure against.

You will also see what a DataForSEO SERP brief costs, how to read SERP volatility, which crawler and AI-info pages matter on your own site, and which post to publish first if you want a citation you can log.

What generative engine optimization means in practice

Generative engine optimization means writing citable passages so a model can use them as a source inside its answer. The acronym GEO names that job: you write so the content can be retrieved and cited inside a synthesized answer, while it still has a chance to rank in Google. The AI search and GEO lesson of our Claude SEO course turns that into exercises.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) names the same work. In practice, if an AI Overview or ChatGPT names you or links you, you are measuring GEO.

The unit of work shifts from the whole page to the passage: a two- or three-sentence block that answers on its own, with a verifiable fact. That block is what a model can lift without dragging your intro along.

How GEO relates to LLM SEO and classic SEO

LLM SEO is the practical name founders use for the same job as generative engine optimization. People search "llm seo" when they want the process behind ChatGPT citations; GEO is the industry label for that process.

Classic SEO still fights for a click in a list. GEO fights to appear inside the synthesized answer. You keep tracking impressions and clicks in Search Console, and you add another layer: were you cited, mentioned, or did the model invent a number that looks like yours?

Google's results also got less stable. Yext data published by Joy Hawkins at Sterling Sky on September 2, 2026 covered 8.16 million location-specific screenshots of search results: organic rankings became 48.7% more volatile from the week of May 18, 2026, when the May 2026 core update rolled out, and 97% of the reports became more volatile. If a single position-one snapshot was already fragile, a single ChatGPT answer is even more so.

That is why I treat SEO and GEO as probabilistic processes at seodraft. Before you chase citations, check whether AI crawlers can reach your content at AI crawlers and keep your public AI policy clear on AI info.

How to get cited by ChatGPT with passage-level signals

ChatGPT tends to cite self-contained passages that open with an answer and carry a number or a proper name. If the block needs the previous paragraph to make sense, the model usually paraphrases and your brand drops out.

Signals I keep seeing in drafts that pass the rules: the H2's first sentence answers the heading in six words or more, and the block carries a number with a unit, a product name, or a date. The passage still has to read true when lifted out of context.

That pushes you toward answer-first writing and firsthand evidence: the fact in the opening line is what makes a passage usable. We walk through that editorial process in How to make AI write without sounding generic.

A cheap firsthand-evidence loop for GEO

The cheap GEO loop starts with a SERP brief and three facts only your business can supply. In seodraft, a DataForSEO SERP brief costs about USD 0.004 when the topic already has metrics, and measuring a keyword batch costs about USD 0.11 per batch.

In our pipeline, where a classifier compares each draft against its brief, reading a whole 1,141-word article costs 0.0001 dollars, against 0.004 for one DataForSEO SERP lookup. So the order is: pay for the brief, load accepted evidence, ask the agent for the body, then let a classifier reread the draft.

Our founder puts it this way: build fast, cheap processes so agents work better. In seodraft that process is profile + evidence bank + brief saved before the body + deterministic rules. You keep approving; the agent writes and the rules cut observable mistakes. Why the evidence bank sits at the center is in Agent-first: why seodraft killed most of its web UI.

How to measure citations without mistaking anecdotes for trends

One ChatGPT answer is a weak signal until you repeat the same prompt set across several runs. Record the exact query, the date, whether there was a URL citation, a brand mention, or only a number that resembles yours.

For Google AI Overview use two layers: did the overview appear, and is your domain among the sources? For ChatGPT, repeat the same prompt set on different days and log the result in a small sheet. The rest of the work you can hand to ChatGPT is in ChatGPT for SEO: six tasks.

If five runs cite you once, you have a weak signal. If twenty runs never show you, the gap usually sits in the passage or the evidence: rewrite the answer-first block before you add more URLs.

Which post to publish first for a usable citation

Publish first the post that answers one concrete question with firsthand evidence and a citation-ready passage. Pick a query where an AI Overview already exists or where ChatGPT answers with sources, and load at least three accepted facts from your bank.

Next, open the topic's SERP brief, write the outline with each H2's opening sentence, then ask the agent for the body. If you want to run that flow with your own agent (Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise or Edu), try seodraft: your agent writes, the rules decide, you approve.

When the draft passes the rules, measure the citation with your prompt sheet and edit only the passage that failed.

Frequently asked questions

What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is the name founders use for optimizing content so large language models can retrieve and cite it. In practice it overlaps with generative engine optimization and AEO: you measure citations and mentions in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, and similar engines.
How to get cited by ChatGPT?
Give the model a self-contained passage with a number or a proper name in the opening sentence, then verify citations across repeated runs. One lucky answer is a weak signal; a baseline over many runs is the measurement.
How do I start generative engine optimization on a small blog?
Start with a SERP brief, load at least three firsthand facts, write answer-first passages, and measure citations on a fixed prompt set.
Is GEO different from classic SEO?
Classic SEO is built to rank and earn clicks in organic results. Generative engine optimization adds citable passages so a model can use your facts inside its synthesized answer while you still track Search Console.
